Universal gateway of the A series

maxi | Mk II

Small-format performer for sophisticated building automation

Anyone who operates a large property needs a lot of space to set up the corresponding infrastructure. So it's good if individual technical elements of an automation system don't take up too much space. With the maxi | Mk II, MBS is now providing a communication interface with impressive features in the form of a new development in the proven "maxi" gateway series: With the smallest dimensions and a maximum of 40,000 data points, it is currently the most space-saving and at the same time most powerful gateway on the market.

The communication infrastructures of extensive properties present their operators with major challenges. If, for example, the fire alarm system alone comprises a six-figure number of smoke detectors with perhaps three data points each, the necessary equipment at automation level requires a lot of space. Entire batteries of control cabinets were previously required just for the installation of the gateways, which serve as the communication interface for the various communication protocols. And then there is the associated cabling and power consumption.

The MBS Universal Gateways:

Interpreters for building automation

Gateways are important components in building automation network architectures. As intermediaries between the various devices and communication protocols, they ensure smooth data exchange.

High performance with low volume

The Gateway maxi | Mk II provides relief here. The tried-and-tested hardware component from MBS GmbH has been completely redeveloped. The result is extremely handy and powerful: it is only a third of the size of conventional devices and its smaller volume alone significantly reduces the number of control cabinets required. As if that wasn't enough, MBS has also doubled the number of data points - the basic version now has 20,000 data points and the extended version 40,000. This reduces the number of components required enormously.

Ultimately, not only are fewer hardware components and less space required in the control cabinet, but the cost of cabling and electricity is also significantly reduced. This means cost savings not only in terms of procurement, but also in terms of control cabinet installation and system operation. There is currently no other gateway on the market that can keep up with these dimensions and this number of data points.

Modular design for flexible applications

The Gateway maxi | Mk II can be easily integrated into existing building automation systems. It has a modular design so that the bus-specific add-on boards, which have already proven themselves in the other series, can be installed directly in the device. In addition to the standard bus protocols, such as KNX, PROFIBUS, LON etc., manufacturer-specific communication protocols can also be added on request. The product is also available as OEM hardware.

Users who are already familiar with the gateways from MBS GmbH will be pleased that the firmware that has been tried and tested over many years is also used for the new development - so they do not have to familiarize themselves with new software. In addition, bugs that can occur in new firmware are practically ruled out.

Familiar quality, impressive performance

All MBS products have two things in common: firstly, feedback from partners and customers is incorporated into their development. Secondly, they are put through their paces before being launched on the market. The Gateway maxi | Mk II has already been in use in an industrial environment for six months and passed this field test with flying colors. With its hard-wearing metal housing, it stands out from the plastic boxes that are otherwise often used, especially in robust control cabinet environments.

The new development replaces its predecessor model and the 19'' gateway. Users who want to add more devices to existing ones can easily integrate the new communication interface into their system. This is because it fits seamlessly into the product range: Nothing changes in terms of handling and firmware, while the quality of the new maxi | Mk II gateway is at the high level to which MBS is accustomed. At the same time, with a lower volume and a maximum of 40,000 data points, it is far ahead in terms of performance. A 19'' variant, optionally with redundant power supply units, is available if required.

Fit for the North American market (option)

The US-based Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has certified the Standard Gateway maxi | Mk II. After checking the technical data, the product descriptions and the device components, an auditor also inspected the proper assembly of the gateway on site. Similar to the European CE mark, the UL logo is an essential prerequisite for entry into the North American market.

All the advantages at a glance:

  • Upgradeable

  • 20,000 - 40,000 data points

  • All important communication protocols are available

  • Integrated web interface for configuration and analysis

  • Integrated real-time clock with capacitor buffering

  • microSD card up to 2GB with which e.g. trend log data can be recorded

  • Fast connection to serial and network-based protocols

  • Robust metal housing for use in harsh control cabinet environments

  • No moving parts such as fans or similar

  • The gateway restarts automatically after a power failure

  • UL-certified (option)

Building automation in the Internet of Things:
MBS gateways become edge devices

  • The gateways from MBS have also been equipped with a driver for MQTT (Message Queue Telemetry Transport), which offers far more than just pure data communication. This turns the gateways into genuine edge devices, giving building automation access to the network of a service provider and enabling data packets to be exchanged between different network structures.

  • It is possible to parameterize MQTT via a cloud, make settings and set data points. After installation, the gateway registers itself in the cloud via MQTT. A BACnet scan can then be started automatically or manually to address the existing devices and query which data points with which properties are present in the system. Finally, the result is transferred from the gateway to the cloud. Communication does not need to be restarted during this process. This makes work considerably easier for distributed properties, as the presence of a technician on site is no longer necessary.

  • Another feature of the new MQTT bus protocol driver is the ability to freely define the data content. Whereas there used to be very rigid specifications for sending data, the data format can now be freely selected. This has the advantage that the gateways can be used independently of the respective cloud operator because they are compatible with all providers.

This is a key prerequisite for driving forward digital transformation processes in building automation. Automated processes can make property management simpler, safer and more energy-efficient. The MBS universal gateways offer property operators the opportunity to exploit the benefits of the cloud for building automation with predictive maintenance or group-wide energy management, for example.

The Sparkplug driver

  • Since the devices have been equipped with an MQTT driver (Message Queue Telemetry Transport), they are already fit for use in cloud communication. The Sparkplug driver is based on this open source communication protocol and focuses on the Internet of Things and ensuring interoperability.

  • Sparkplug uses the freedom that MQTT offers building automation and supplements it with the necessary definitions for the direct use of the network protocol. This includes, for example, how devices log into the network and what data they make available. At the same time, Sparkplug defines and uses an economical binary data format, which means that less bandwidth is consumed and data transmission is faster. In addition, communication is managed via a central instance, the primary SCADA/IIoT host.
