Level converter

LC 30 | M-Bus/USB

Inexpensive consumption data recording in proven quality

Level converters are used to supply the connected devices in an M-Bus system with power. The power requirement is metered in so-called standard loads. MBS has decoupled the LC 30 M-Bus/USB level converter from its tried-and-tested standard gateways and now also offers it as a stand-alone device. The highlight: the price of this tried and tested circuit element is unbeatably low.

As an economical technology, the M-Bus is still very much in demand for transmitting consumption data from all types of meters (electricity, gas, heat, water, etc.) to BACS components (building automation) or building management systems. Using a serial protocol and a two-wire cable with reverse polarity protection, the measurement data is transferred from the meters (slaves) to the BACS components or the building management system, which act as the master. The bus supplies the end devices with the current required for communication, the so-called standard load, which corresponds to 1.5 mA.

In each case 30 additional standard loads:

In order to expand the number of supported standard loads in an M-Bus system, the existing systems often have to be extended. The LC 30 M-Bus/USB level converter from MBS performs this function. It is equipped with one connection each for M-Bus and USB and is used wherever consumption data is to be read out with M-Bus and transferred to an M-Bus master with a free USB port. Each device is designed for up to 30 standard loads of 1.5 mA each and therefore for a maximum of 30 meter units.

In principle, two scenarios are conceivable for the application:

  1. The LC 30 M-Bus/USB level converter can be connected to an MBS gateway with a free USB port. With the additional, external level converter, the data from up to 30 meters can then be read out and transferred to other bus protocols via the gateway.

  2. Additional meters can be added to an existing building automation system. The LC 30 M-Bus/USB level converter can be connected to the free USB port of an existing DDC, i.e. a component for control and regulation tasks, or a building management system based on the M-Bus protocol. It then transfers the M-Bus data from these additional meters to the components of the BMS.

Little effort, low price

As the LC 30 M-Bus/USB level converter is a spin-off from the successful MBS gateways, no development work was required. It has been tried and tested over a long period of time and has been proven to work excellently. Equipped with its own housing, it is now available to all property operators who want to expand their M-Bus systems - and with an extremely advantageous price-performance ratio.

All the advantages at a glance:

  • Extremely favorable price-performance ratio

  • Robust metal housing for use in harsh control cabinet environments

  • No moving parts such as fans or similar
