Test plug-in

The BACnet test plug-in

In order to check systems for a desired status, the BACnet Test Plug-In was developed for BACeye. The plug-in can be configured via test plans so that, for example, existing devices and objects are checked for compliance with AKS (system code). Furthermore, users can determine whether the design of an entire system complies with the specifications or just test a single device (unit test).

Another feature of BACeye/SC is the offline mode. BACeye/SC records a point of the respective system, which can later be reloaded and navigated offline

Task and function:

The BACnet test plug-in is intended to eliminate the source of errors caused by the media break at the interface between planning and implementation. The plug-in offers the possibility of an automated check for compliance with specified requirements (specifications) with regard to a BACnet network. Complete systems or just individual devices or objects can be checked for a desired status.

Background:

Various media transitions occur during the process of creating a BACnet network, which often lead to loss of information and inaccuracies. There are media transitions between planning/defining the specifications, tendering, awarding the contract and implementation. For example, a planner (client, building owner, end customer) plans a BACnet network with building automation systems and hands over the documents to the project planner. The project planner accepts the specifications and plans the BACnet network (e.g. with a planning system). At this point of separation between planning and implementation, there is a media break with a certain risk of errors.

The final acceptance by the planner usually includes testing for function, completeness and compliance with the specified rules. It is not uncommon for the planner to discover that a property does not fulfill the required function or does not fulfill it completely after handover by the installer.

Instead of laborious manual testing, the commissioning planner - and also the commissioning project planner before acceptance - can carry out automatic, reliable tests for the entire network or for parts of it (workflow see section 4.1).

The tests are configured and saved in test plans and test cases. In the event of an error, a detailed error list is generated as a result. Errors are then corrected and the BACnet network or parts of it are tested again. Through several test-correction iterations, the BACnet network is brought to the optimum state and can then be put into operation without errors.

The following individual BACnet elements can be checked for various properties:

  • Network

  • Device

  • Object

  • Property

Whether the test result is positive or negative in each case depends on the corresponding test case. On the one hand, the presence of a certain object can be evaluated as positive, in another case as negative.
