XT Series Universal Gateways
The next generation of the Universal Gateway platform
With the XT Series, MBS introduces the next generation of its Universal Gateway platform.
The new series combines proven gateway technology with a modern security architecture and significantly higher performance. An integrated secure element, more computing power, and expanded memory lay the foundation for future requirements in building automation.
Like all universal gateways from MBS, the XT series is based on a common software platform with a central data point manager and software-based protocol processing.
The physical connection of different bus systems is achieved via integrated hardware extensions (IHE). This creates a modular gateway architecture that can be flexibly adapted to different project requirements.
One platform. Many possibilities.
The XT Series follows the principle of the universal gateway platform. Communication protocols are always processed using software. The hardware only handles the physical connection to bus systems.
This architectural principle enables a clear separation between:
log processing
physical bus connection
This allows systems from building automation, energy management, and industrial automation to be reliably connected with each other.
Depending on the configuration, different bus systems can be connected directly, for example:
KNX
DALI
M-Bus
PROFINET
LON
CAN
X-Link
Other combinations are possible.
Integration of different protocols
Building automation rarely consists of just one system.
In practice, different technologies come together—such as building management systems, energy management, industrial automation systems, and cloud-based applications.
Universal gateways from MBS ensure that these systems can communicate with each other.
The platform supports all common communication protocols used in building automation and industry, including, for example:
BACnet
Modbus
MQTT
OPC UA
as well as other industrial and building technology standards.
If a specific protocol is required in a project, MBS can also develop the appropriate drivers itself and integrate them into the platform. This keeps the gateway platform open for new requirements and future system architectures.
IP-based protocols can be used directly via the gateway.
For bus-based systems such as KNX, DALI, M-Bus, PROFINET, LON, or CAN, the physical connection is established via integrated hardware extensions (IHE).
This creates a flexible gateway architecture that allows different systems to be reliably connected to each other.
Typical integrations include, for example:
BACnet ↔ Modbus
BACnet ↔ KNX
BACnet ↔ MQTT
Modbus ↔ MQTT
KNX ↔ BACnet
Instead of requiring a separate device for each connection, the MBS platform follows a simple principle:
One gateway. Many possibilities.
Security and performance reimagined
With the XT Series, MBS is expanding the Universal Gateway platform with additional security and performance features.
These include, among others:
Integrated secure element for security-related functions
Support for digital certificates
encrypted file systems
significantly more powerful CPU
extended main memory
This means that the XT series is designed for modern security requirements and future developments in building automation.

Further variants are continuously being added.
AvailabilityThe XT-Series Universal Gateway platform is expected to be available starting in Q3 2026.
Further information on individual gateway variants will follow shortly.
Developed and manufactured in Europe
The circuit boards for the XT series are manufactured in Europe. Final assembly takes place at the MBS company site in Krefeld.
This means customers benefit from short supply chains, long-term availability, and a stable product platform.
MBS Universal Gateway Platform
MBS has been developing solutions for open and secure building automation for over 35 years. The Universal Gateway platform reliably connects systems, bus interfaces, and communication protocols—regardless of manufacturers or system architectures.
The XT Series represents the logical next step in the development of this platform.
