Different systems. One common language.
Building automation rarely consists of just one system. Controllers, sensors, management systems, and cloud applications use different communication protocols. To enable their data to be shared, they need a component that receives information, maps it, and forwards it to the appropriate target system.
The MBS Universal Gateway Core of the XT Series handles this task. It processes various communication protocols using software and connects them via a central data point manager. As the base model of the XT Series, the Core features the platform’s basic interfaces but does not include an additional integrated bus interface.

A gateway for various communication protocols
The XT Series Universal Gateway Core is not limited to a single communication protocol. Depending on the configuration and licensing, the following IP-based protocols, among others, can be used:

Additional building automation, industrial, and project-specific protocols can be processed within the same gateway platform. The required protocols are selected based on the specific application.
The central data point manager serves as a neutral intermediary layer between the configured communication protocols. A protocol driver receives information from the source system and passes it on to the data point manager. The data point manager assigns this information to one or more target protocols according to the project configuration. This allows different automation systems to exchange information even if they use different technical addressing schemes or data models.
Which model is right for your project?
The Universal Gateway Core is suitable for projects that do not require an additional direct bus connection. If a bus system such as KNX, DALI2, M-Bus, PROFINET, or CAN is to be physically connected, a Core+ model with the appropriate features is used. Combined variants are available for the direct connection of multiple bus systems.
Technical Basis of the XT Series
The Universal Gateway Core is based on the new XT Series hardware platform. A more powerful CPU and expanded main memory provide additional capacity for demanding integration tasks. A completely redesigned web interface is also available to simplify configuration and commissioning.
The new hardware also enhances the gateway's security architecture. At its core is an integrated secure element. It provides the technical foundation for a secure boot process that can detect tampering with the bootloader or kernel.
Digital certificates can be securely stored in the Secure Element. It also provides the foundation for encrypting the entire file system on the SD card. This allows both the system and customer-specific user and configuration data to be stored in encrypted form.
Configuration and Commissioning
The web interface allows you to configure and analyze the gateway. This includes, among other things, parameterization, setting network addresses, and creating and managing data points.
A REST API also makes it possible to automatically configure settings from external applications. This is particularly relevant for OEM applications and recurring device configurations.

Made in Germany
The XT Series circuit boards are manufactured in Europe. Final assembly takes place at the MBS facility in Krefeld.
MBS develops its own gateway platform and supports projects from selection and planning through commissioning to long-term support.

Yes. Depending on the project configuration and licensing, the same gateway platform can handle BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, MQTT, OPC UA, and other protocols. The central data point manager retrieves the information from the respective source protocols and makes it available to one or more target protocols.

These communication protocols are processed via software in the MBS Universal Gateways and configured to suit the specific project. The choice of device model therefore depends primarily on the required physical interfaces and the systems to be directly connected.

A Core+ model with the appropriate features is required for the direct physical connection of these bus systems. The specific integrated hardware expansion is indicated directly in the product name. If multiple bus systems are to be connected directly, a combined device model may be considered.

"Core" refers to the XT Series model without any additional integrated hardware extensions. "Core+" refers to a model with at least one additional integrated hardware extension. The designation that follows indicates which bus interface is integrated, such as KNX, M-Bus, or PROFINET.
The "Plus" therefore does not indicate a higher performance or quality class, but rather additional hardware features.

A data point represents a single piece of information that is processed within the gateway—for example, a measured value, a status message, or a setpoint.
The required number of data points depends on how much information is to be processed and transmitted between the systems involved. The appropriate data point capacity is selected based on the project’s requirements and within the limits available for the device configuration. MBS can assist in determining the required data point capacity if needed.

Yes. The functions of the existing bus protocol drivers and their data point lists are retained. Customer-specific macros can also continue to be used. Existing configurations and applications can therefore continue to function as before.
However, operation via the new web interface and individual auto-scan procedures may vary. Another requirement is that a compatible XT device model be available.
