Many I/O modules communicate reliably via Modbus. However, as soon as their data needs to be integrated into other automation and management systems, manual engineering often becomes necessary.

Together, METZ CONNECT and MBS have largely automated this process.

The Solution
METZ CONNECT offers a versatile family of Modbus-based I/O modules.

MBS has integrated the device information for the individual module types into the universal firmware of its gateways. When a scan of the Modbus bus is initiated via the web interface, the gateway automatically detects which of the supported modules is connected.

The appropriate data model is assigned immediately. The Modbus data can then be made available in BACnet, MQTT, or KNX.

The configuration can then be completed in just a few steps.

Which METZ CONNECT modules are automatically detected?
The solution currently supports 19 different I/O module types from the METZ CONNECT Modbus family. The MBS gateway uses the communication on the Modbus bus to determine which supported device type is connected.

How does automatic data mapping work?
For supported modules, the relevant device and data point information is stored in the MBS gateway’s universal firmware. Once a device is detected, the appropriate data model is automatically loaded and assigned to the module’s data points.

Which communication protocols are supported?
Data from METZ CONNECT modules can currently be transmitted via BACnet, MQTT, and KNX. Support for additional protocols, such as PROFINET, is planned.

Is manual configuration still required?
Device detection and basic mapping occur automatically. Project-specific settings can then be configured via the MBS gateway's web interface.

What are the benefits of automatic device detection?
It reduces the amount of manual engineering work, shortens commissioning time, and lowers the risk of incorrect data point mappings. At the same time, maintenance is simplified because the device type and data structure are clearly defined.

Can the solution also be used outside of building automation?
